My inspiration
How are we to understand private law? This question is by no means new. It has been answered by others. But not by me, and that‘s what I am going to do. The key concepts of private law (property, contract, tort) interact, but how and to what purpose? Should they promote welfare or fairness? What role do fundamental values play: freedom, human dignity, solidarity?

My inspiration
Civil law is especially fascinating because of the tension between legal certainty on the one hand and reasonableness and equity on the other. The new Civil Code of The Netherlands contains a considerable number of provisions which in themselves are rather vague and (can) only acquire a real outline by their application. The legislator seldom has the final word; much depends on the subsequent “finding” of the law. This law finding takes place in the courtroom but also, particularly, in academic research. To contribute to that process, is an inspiring task.

My inspiration
The gap between ‘law in the books’ and ‘law in action’ forms the chief motive for my research, which focuses in particular on the contents and the effectiveness of civil law in practice. Subjects such as legal decision making, arbitration and proceedings before the court, contracts, security, security and liability have my special interest. From a generalist perspective I like to study interfaces and possibilities for reciprocal attunement of legal areas. In essence the thread of my educational work is the same. I build bridges between the theory and practice of civil law, between law as a science and the legal profession or between civil law and other legal areas. I like this in lecture halls and, in particular, among student associations and pleading groups.
